Barty was born to Loretta and Bartemius Crouch Sr. His father was an ambitious type, always working to climb the rungs of the Ministry ladder and not paying much attention to what went on at home. He expected his son to act in much the same manner, and was at times almost deliberately heartless to the boy in the name of teaching him about ‘the real world.’ Barty’s mother responded by being a touch overbearing, but he continually sought out his father’s withheld approval.

When he entered Hogwarts, Barty was painfully shy and bookish, but he managed to make friends with the younger Black brother, Regulus. Even though he gradually came out of his shell living among so many other children, Barty never fully assimilated into society at Hogwarts and was often picked on. The only person he remained even somewhat close to throughout his school years was Regulus, but even that relationship was somewhat strained in fifth year when Barty developed a bit of a boy-crush on his friend’s older brother Sirius. He didn’t really know how to handle the situation, and just retreated in on himself and tried to repress his sexuality.

Upon graduation from Hogwarts, his friend Regulus introduced him to the Death Eaters and convinced him to join. He did, even knowing that his father wouldn’t approve, because in some oddly rational way it seemed like everything his father would want for him. Except affiliated in wrong direction, of course. Minor detail. In the Death Eaters, he found a group that accepted him, even though at first it more out of necessity on their part. He worked hard to further Voldemort’s goals, and the Dark Lord came to replace his own father as the most important figure in his life. As his real father became more and more a spokesperson against the Death Eaters, Barty became of more interest to Voldemort, sealing the young man’s loyalty by showing him great favor. Even though Crouch Sr knew his son was a Death Eater, he never suspected his own son would turn on him, but Barty did eventually betray his father by leading an attack against him in his own home. Crouch Sr was quietly apprehended, accused of treason in the papers, and sent to prison.

Barty continued to prove himself useful after his father’s arrest by being a dedicated and hard worker. His own nature wouldn’t allow him to do anything less than perfectly, and he rose in the ranks quickly. He was also willing to give everything he had to the cause of his Lord and, indeed, when the idea of Work Camps came up he used his family’s entire fortune to fund the venture. The camps are still run by Barty, although they are heavily subsidized and affiliated with the Ministry they actually bring in a lot of money for Barty. Bribes, payment from wizards who need ‘labor’ for their own projects, and the occasional sly ‘loan’ or a prisoner or two are fairly common practice.
